  • Pretty Dumpster

    Pretty Dumpster

I like the density of objects in this photograph. My eyes walk backward from the yellow lettering on the dumpster in the foreground to the orange barriers, to the second dumpster, to the tagged sign, the cars, the third dumpster and finally the distant street and building lights.

  • College Bar

    College Bar

This is a crowded composition—things land where they land. My eyes move from the graffiti above on the right through the people in the center to the distant window of another restaurant. I then move from the neon cocktail glass to the open sign on the left and finally to the white and orange lights…

  • Hoza Pizza

    Hoza Pizza

Certain locations in downtown Oakland can trigger fond memories and one of those locations was Hoza Pizza. One night I ate one of the best slices of pizza I’ve ever had. It was topped with fresh plum tomatoes, garlic and the perfect amount of cheese. The music was perfect, the crowd was diverse and the…

    Red Road

I frequently work outside on rainy nights and while I’d rather not do the work I currently do, the artist in me has always found artful things wherever I happen to be. This scene was near a corner drain on a street in Oakland. The red reflection is from a traffic light and the distant…

    Foggy Sunset

Fog during sunset is not uncommon in the East Bay. I love the way it covers the hills with graded light that seems to emanate from the ground. Sadly, there are probably noxious particles suspended in this same lovely light.

  • Brooks Island

    Brooks Island

I love the graceful and solitary profile of Brooks Island, shrouded in fog and visible from El Cerrito. Veiled in fog and capped by pillowy clouds are distant hills in Sausalito. I feel as if this is a portrayal of my most common state of my mind.

  • El Cerrito View

    El Cerrito View

I’m up on one of the numerous hills in El Cerrito, CA, on a sunny, and foggy morning. Even though I’ve driven down this hill countless times, I’m never tired of the view, especially when there’s fog to light the air.

  • Layered Space

    Layered Space

I love fog because it makes the air we breathe, visible. It can also turn the world into a black a white, stratified, visual spectacle. It adds depth through progressive layers of diffusion and solidifies space.

  • Six Drops

    Six Drops

As peaceful and settled, as these six water drops appear to be, I can’t help imagining tension when I look at this image. My mind keeps asking when will they drop.

Winters were rainy when I arrived in California in 2009. Then in 2012, winters became dry at first I did not miss the rainy winters but when drought conditions said, I became worried and disappointed. No, that rainy winters seem to be normal again I am elated.
